What is Datafest?

DataFest is the largest annual datathon on the West Coast, bringing together over 400 participants from multiple universities for an exciting 48-hour competition. Teams of up to five undergraduate students work collaboratively to explore a rich and complex dataset, uncovering meaningful insights under the pressure of the clock. The dataset itself is kept completely secret until the moment the competition begins, adding an element of surprise and challenge that tests teams' ability to think on their feet. At the end of the competition, teams present their findings in a concise three-slide presentation, including a title slide, making clear and compelling data storytelling just as important as the analysis itself.

Logistics

Friday kicks off the competition with check-in and an Opening Ceremony at 5 PM. Shortly after, around 6 PM, the highly anticipated dataset is finally revealed, marking the official start of the 48-hour challenge. This is your first chance to dive in, get familiar with the data, and start strategizing with your team.

Saturday is all about the grind. Teams spend the day exploring the dataset, coordinating with one another, and refining their analysis and presentation. Mentors will be stopping by throughout the day to offer guidance, and there will also be fun activities sprinkled in to help you destress and recharge.

Sunday brings everything together. Teams wrap up their work and deliver their presentations in the early afternoon, showcasing the insights they've uncovered over the weekend. The event concludes with a Closing Ceremony around 5 PM, celebrating the hard work, creativity, and collaboration of all participants.

Benefits

Participating in DataFest comes with a ton of perks beyond just the competition itself. Every participant receives a free DataFest t-shirt, swag, and food and coffee to keep you fueled throughout the weekend. It's also a rare opportunity to connect with your professors and TAs outside of the classroom setting, as well as network with alumni and industry professionals who are there to support and engage with competitors. Most importantly, DataFest gives you hands-on experience working with a real, complex dataset, providing the kind of practical, resume-worthy experience that you simply can't get from a homework assignment.

Prizes

At the end of the competition, awards will be given out across four categories: Best Insight, Best Visualization, Best Use of External Data, and Judges' Choice. Winners in each category will receive a medallion, a certificate, and a one-year American Statistical Association (ASA) membership. Honorable mention awards will also be presented to recognize outstanding work across the field of competitors.

Application Process

To participate in DataFest, teams must submit a single application form by the posted deadline, with no exceptions. The form will ask for basic information about each teammate, including names, UIDs, majors, and year in school. When it comes to priority consideration, teams that include seniors are given first preference, followed by teams with juniors, and teams of five members are also given priority. Be sure to get your application in on time for the best chance of securing your spot!
